A PROJECT DESIGNED TO IDENTIFY DRUG-ABUSING ARRESTEES AND DIVERT THEM TO EITHER JAIL TREATMENT OR COMMUNITY DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAMS.
Abstract
CLIENTS ARE ADMITTED TO THE PROGRAM IF THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE DADE COUNTY PRETRIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAM, IN WHICH CASE THEY GO INTO COMMUNITY TREATMENT; IF THEY ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE INTERVENTION PROGRAM, IN WHICH CASE THEY GO INTO COMMUNITY TREATMENT OR A TASC JAIL TREATMENT UNIT; OR IF THEY DON'T FALL INTO THE FIRST TWO CATEGORIES THEY CAN BE ADMITTED ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE STATE'S ATTORNEY, IN WHICH CASE THEY GO TO JAIL TREATMENT OR TO COMMUNITY TREATMENT UNDER PROBATION SUPERVISION. THE MIAMI TASC (TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES TO STREET CRIME) PROJECT HAS FIVE MAJOR OPERATIONAL COMPONENTS: SCREENING (LOCATED AT MIAMI'S CENTRAL BOOKING AND HOLDING FACILITY); INTAKE: TRACKING, EVALUATION, AND RESEARCH (THIS UNIT INSURES CLIENTS' APPEARANCES IN COURT AND PROVIDES THE DEFENSE COUNSEL WITH TREATMENT PROGRESS REPORTS); VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION; AND JAIL TREATMENT, WHICH DEVISES TREATMENT PLANS FOR TASC CLIENTS WHO ARE IN PRETRIAL DETENTION OR WHO ARE ALREADY SENTENCED. MAJOR PROJECT STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES ARE IDENTIFIED AS WELL AS SOME POTENTIAL PROBLEMS THAT MIGHT BE ENCOUNTERED.
