THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBED APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRON MICROPROBE ANALYSIS TO THE EXAMINATION OF ULTRA-SMALL EVIDENCE IN TWO CASE SITUATIONS ENCOUNTERED AT THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE CRIME DETECTION LABORATORY.
Abstract
THE TWO CASES INVOLVED EXAMINATION OF MINUTE FRAGMENTS AND METAL TURNINGS RESULTING FROM A SAFEBREAKING AND EXAMINATION OF ABRASION ON THE DOOR PANEL OF A CAR IN WHICH A DOUBLE MURDER HAD TAKEN PLACE. THE AUTHORS NOTE THAT ELECTRON MICROPROBE ANALYSIS IS A NON-DESTRUCTIVE, QUANTITATIVE METHOD OF INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS WHICH CAN BE SUITABLY APPLIED TO PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN FORENSIC SCIENCE.
