THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE QUAY ADULT OFFENDER TYPOLOGY IS DESCRIBED, AND THE PROGRAMS OF TWO CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS WHICH UTILIZE THIS TYPOLOGY ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
IN ORDER TO CONSTRUCT THE ADULT TYPOLOGY, SAMPLES OF INMATES WERE STUDIED FROM FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THREE INSTRUMENTS WERE USED TO OBTAIN DATA ON INMATES: A PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE, A CHECKLIST OF LIFE HISTORY RECORDS, AND A CORRECTIONAL ADJUSTMENT CHECKLIST. FACTOR ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO THIS DATA REVEALED FIVE DIMENSIONS: AGGRESSIVE-PSYCHOPATHIC, NEUROTIC-ANXIOUS, IMMATUREDEPENDENT, SITUATIONAL OFFENDERS, AND MANIPULATIVE. THE FEDERAL INSTITUTIONS AT OXFORD, WISCONSIN AND SEAGOVILLE GROUP INMATES ACCORDING TO THESE DIMENSIONS AND PROVIDE DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT FOR THE VARIOUS INMATE TYPES. PROGRAMS AT EACH INSTITUTION ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED.
