STUDY OF 341 MALE PAROLEES IN THE MARYLAND DIVISION OF PAROLE AND PROBATION IMPACT PROJECT.
Abstract
MEN UNDER SUPERVISION IN THE IMPACT PROJECT ARE YOUTHFUL (18-26 YEARS WITH A MEAN AGE OF 21.4 YEARS); CONVICTED OF BURGLARY, STRANGER-TO STRANGER HOMICIDE, RAPE, ROBBERY, OR AGGRAVATED ASSAULT; AND RESIDE IN THE CITY OF BALTIMORE. MODERATE, SIGNIFICANT CORRELATIONS WERE FOUND BETWEEN STABILITY (INFERRED FROM JOB REFERRAL RECORDS) AND OCCUPATIONAL CONSISTENCY, JOB SKILL, SOCIALIZATION (CALIFORNIA PSYCHOLOGICAL INVENTORY), PRIOR JOB TENURE, INCARCERATIONS, AUTO THEFT, AND A BASE EXPECTANCY MEASURE, BUT NOT PAROLE AGENT RATINGS. A CROSS-VALIDATED MULTIPLE CORRELATION OF JOB SKILL, SOCIALIZATION, INCARCERATIONS, AND AUTO THEFT WITH EMPLOYMENT STABILITY WAS MADE. RESULTS SUGGEST THE IMPORTANCE OF VOCATIONAL SKILL AND CONSISTENCY IN PROMOTING EMPLOYMENT STABILITY, AND PROVIDE A TOOL USING BOTH PERSONAL HISTORY AND ALSO CURRENT OCCUPATIONAL DESCRIPTORS TO IDENTIFY MEN IN NEED OF VOCATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
