AFTER DISCUSSING THE SOURCES OF THE POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROBLEM, THE AUTHORS OUTLINE THE CHAMPAIGN (IL) PROGRAM UNDERTAKEN TO DEFINE PROBLEM AREAS IN POLICE-COMMUNITY COOPERATION AND COMMUNICATION.
Abstract
THIS PROGRAM IS A COOPERATIVE EFFORT OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS DEPARTMENT, AND POLICE SCIENCE STUDENTS OF THE COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS. ELEMENTS OF THIS PROGRAM INCLUDE A CATALOG OF INCIDENTS OF POLICECOMMUNITY MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND A COMMUNITY QUESTIONNAIRE ON POLICE AND COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS OF THE COMMUNITY ROLE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. THESE ELEMENTS ARE TO BE USED IN IDENTIFYING AREAS OF MISUNDERSTANDING AND IN IMPROVING INFORMATION FLOW BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE POLICE.
