THE INMATE EDUCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM (IETP) IS DESCRIBED, PROBLEMS COMMON TO CORRECTIONAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE DISCUSSED, PROGRAM RESULTS ARE PREDICTED, AND EVALUATION CRITERIA ARE SPECIFIED.
Abstract
IETP, OPERATED BY JOLIET JUNIOR COLLEGE, OFFERS VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND AN ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE TO INMATES IN THREE ILLINOIS STATE CORRECTIONAL CENTERS. THE USE OF SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL MODULES, PREPARED PACKAGES OF GUIDES, LEARNING MATERIALS, AND TESTS, ELIMINATES THE NEED TO GATHER STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS IN ONE PLACE AT ONE TIME. STUDENTS MAY WORK AT THEIR OWN SPEED, THUS ELIMINATING THE PROBLEM OF THE DISPARITY IN EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUNDS OF INMATES. THESE MODULES MAY INCORPORATE THE USE OF VIDEOCASSETTES, WORKBOOKS, FILMS, TAPES, TEXTS, ETC. BUDGETARY BENEFITS ARE SAID TO ACCRUE OVER TIME, SINCE IT COSTS LITTLE TO ADMINISTER THE COURSES ONCE THEY ARE PREPARED. EVALUATION IS SUGGESTED ON THE BASIS OF STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRES AND INTERVIEWS, PRE-AND POST-COURSE TESTING, COURSE COMPLETION RATES, AND OUTSIDE EVALUATION. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT IEPT WILL RESULT IN INCREASED AND DIVERSIFIED INMATE ENROLLMENT, AND IMPROVED SUCCESS, IN CORRECTIONAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.
