AFTER OUTLINING THE SENTENCING OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA, STATISTICS ON THE PERCENT OF RECIDIVISM AND OFFENDER SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH EACH SENTENCE TYPE ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
IT IS NOTED THAT FOR FIRST OFFENDERS, THOSE RECEIVING CUSTODY OR SUPERVISION SENTENCES HAD HIGHER RECIDIVISM RATES THAN THOSE WHO RECEIVED THE LESS SEVERE SENTENCES OF FINES OR BOND WITHOUT SUPERVISION. THE DATA ON THE SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE JUVENILES INDICATE THAT THE JUVENILES RECEIVING THE HARSHER SENTENCES GENERALLY HAD THE HIGHEST PROPORTION OF PATHOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES.
