THIS STUDY ATTEMPTS SOME THEORETICAL INTEGRATION BY VIEWING STUDENT PROTEST AS AN INSTANCE OF A MORE GENERAL CLASS OF SOCIAL PHENOMENON - COLLECTIVE DEVIANCE.
Abstract
FOUR THEORIES OF GANG DELINQUENCY, ANOTHER WELL-STUDIED FORM OF COLLECTIVE DEVIANCE, ARE EXTENDED AND APPLIED TO STUDENT PROTEST. AN ASSESSMENT OF THE APPLICABILITY OF EACH OF THESE APPROACHES TO STUDENT PROTEST REVEALS THE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS WHICH MUST BE ADDRESSED BY ANY GENERAL THEORY OF COLLECTIVE DEVIANCE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT NONE OF THE GENERAL APPROACHES TO COLLECTIVE DEVIANCE EXTENDED FROM ORIGINAL THEORIES OF SUBCULTURAL DELINQUENCY IS WHOLLY APPLICABLE TO STUDENT PROTEST. EACH OF THESE THEORIES HOWEVER IS SAID TO RELATE A NUMBER OF PREVIOUSLY UNCONNECTED FINDINGS ON STUDENT PROTEST, SUGGESTS EXPLANATIONS OF CERTAIN OF ITS IMPORTANT FEATURES, HELP IDENTIFY UNRESOLVED EMPIRICAL ISSUES, AND SUGGEST SOME NEW HYPOTHESES.
