BASED ON A SERIES OF PAPERS WRITTEN BY PROJECT STAFF, THIS TEXT DESCRIBES A SIX-YEAR EXPERIMENT IN THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY CONCEPT CONDUCTED AT THE DANNEMORA STATE HOSPITAL AT CLINTON PRISON, NEW YORK.
Abstract
THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING ARE OUTLINED. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DANNEMORA PROGRAM IS THEN DESCRIBED, AND DETAILS ON SELECTION AND TRAINING OF THE GUARDS AND SELECTION OF INMATES ARE PROVIDED. SPECIAL SECTIONS ARE DEVOTED TO SUCH ISSUES AS HOMOSEXUALITY, RACE RELATIONS, AND UNIVERSITY WORK IN PRISONS. THE RESULTS OF AN EVALUATION OF THE PROGRAM ARE OUTLINED, AND DESCRIPTIONS OF A VISIT BACK TO DANNEMORA AND A REUNION WITH DANNEMORA 'GRADS' IN NEW YORK CITY ARE ALSO PROVIDED.
