THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A POLICE INFORMATION SYSTEM THAT EMPLOYS VARIOUS ADVANCED TECHNIQUES INCLUDING ON-LINE TELEPROCESSING AS WELL AS MICROGRAPHIC FILE STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL.
Abstract
THIS SYSTEM IS BEING SHARED BY THE BILLINGS (MT) POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE YELLOWSTONE COUNTY (MT) SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. THE SYSTEM IS PREDICATED ON A COMPUTER-HOUSED INDEX OF KNOWN OFFENDERS THAT WILL COLLECT AND MAINTAIN PERTINENT PERSONAL AND PHYSICAL DATA (INCLUDING FULL SINGLE FINGERPRINTS CLASSIFICATION CODING AS WELL AS MODUS-OPERANDI CODING) AND THE MICROIMAGE ADDRESSES OF ALL APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS. THROUGH THE USE OF INTERACTIVE TERMINALS, THE COMPUTER WILL ACCEPT INQUIRIES IN THE FORM OF PARTIAL OR FULL SETS OF DESCRIPTORS (PHYSICAL AND/OR PERSONAL) AND WILL REPLY WITH A LISTING OF ALL INDIVIDUALS WHOSE RECORDS SHOW THAT THEY MEET THE ENTERED CRITERIA. THE RESPONSE WILL INCLUDE THE ADDRESSES OF ALL APPLICABLE MICROFILMED DOCUMENTS. THE INQUIRY DESCRIPTORS CAN CONSIST OF A PARTIAL SET OF SINGLE FINGERPRINT CLASSIFICATION CODES, SUCH AS THOSE THAT MIGHT BE AVAILABLE FROM A SET OF PARTIAL LATENT PRINTS AS LIFTED FROM A CRIME SCENE. THIS INFORMATION CAN BE SUPPLEMENTED BY ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT MIGHT BE AVAILABLE SUCH AS A PARTIAL PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION. AFTER SEARCHING ITS FILES, THE COMPUTER WILL OUTPUT THE ABOVE NOTED LIST WHICH INCLUDES THE APPROPRIATE MICROIMAGE ADDRESSES. THESE IMAGES WILL BE RETRIEVED BY THE INVESTIGATOR FOR DETAILED EXAMINATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
