REPORT ON A STUDY TO DETERMINE WHETHER JUVENILES ADJUST AS WELL ON PAROLE WITHOUT FORMAL SUPERVISION AS A CORRESPONDING GROUP RECEIVING CONVENTIONAL SUPERVISION.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO EXAMINE PAROLE OUTCOMES RESULTING FROM DIFFERENT DEGREES OF SUPERVISION GIVEN TO JUVENILES RELEASED FROM THE TWO MAJOR DELINQUENCY INSTITUTIONS IN MINNESOTA AND TO IDENTIFY THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF HELP SOUGHT AND RECEIVED BY THESE YOUTHS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY SETTING AFTER PAROLE RELEASE. THE PERSONAL AND SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POPULATION OF PAROLEES RELEASED DURING THE STUDY PERIOD WERE TRACED FOR TEN ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK AND JUDGMENTAL ASSESSMENT' PAROLE SUPERVISION DID NOT HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT UPON PAROLE ADJUSTMENT. WITHIN THE GROUP OF BOYS, SIGNIFICANTLY MORE SUPERVISED SUBJECTS HAD PAROLE REVOKED DURING THE TEN-MONTH FOLLOW-UP THAN DID THE UNSUPERVISED GROUP MEMBERS. A SIMILAR BUT NOT STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT TENDENCY WAS OBSERVED AMONG FEMALE PAROLEES STUDIED. THE DATA ALSO INDICATED THAT BOTH SUPERVISED AND UNSUPERVISED SUBJECTS TURNED TO CLOSE RELATIVES AND PEERS RATHER THAN PROFESSIONALS FOR AID IN PROBLEM-SOLVING.
