THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THREE SWEDISH PRISONS WHICH HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO SERVE HIGHLY SPECIALIZED GOALS: STUDIEGARDEN, AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY; GAVLE, A MODIFIED THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY; AND TILBERGA, A PRISON FACTORY.
Abstract
STUDIEGARDEN IS AN OPEN PRISON THAT ACCEPTS PRISONERS WITH LONGER-THAN-AVERAGE SENTENCES. IT ENJOYS A REPUTATION AS A SERIOUS INSTITUTION THAT IS NOT A FREE RIDE. GAVLE, A CLOSED PRISON, FEATURES STAFF-INMATE CONSULTATION ON INSTITUTIONAL POLICY-SETTING. TILBERGA IS A BUSY PRISON WOOD SHOP THAT PAYS ITS INMATES WAGES COMPARABLE TO THOSE ON THE OUTSIDE. SOME CONTRASTS BETWEEN THE CALIFORNIA AND SWEDISH CORRECTIONAL SYSTEMS ARE DRAWN.
