COVERAGE OF CRIME STORIES IN THE TWO MAJOR ST. LOUIS, (MO) NEWSPAPERS FOR 1969 THROUGH 1973 IS EXAMINED AND COMPARED WITH FBI UNIFORM CRIME REPORT DATA TO SEE IF REPORTING TRENDS ACCURATELY REFLECT CRIME TRENDS.
Abstract
IT WAS FOUND THAT HOW MUCH VARIOUS TYPES OF CRIME INCREASE OR DECREASE FROM YEAR TO YEAR IS UNRELATED TO HOW MUCH ATTNETION IS GIVEN THEM BY HE PRESS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TYPE OF CRIME AND ITS LOCATION WITHIN THE CITY AFFECT THE AMOUNT OF COVERAGE IT RECEIVES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
