INTENDED FOR USE IN CLASSROOM OR ROLL CALL TRAINING SESSIONS, THIS TRAINING KEY PROVIDES A CONCISE LESSON ON ALCOHOLISM CAUSES, THE SYMPTOMS OF ALCOHOLISM, AND NEW APPROACHES TO THE TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLISM.
Abstract
THIS KEY IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE AN AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEM OF AOCOHOLISM TO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER SO THAT HE/SHE CAN MAINTAIN POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS ALCOHOLICS AND PROBLEM DRINKERS AND DEAL WITH THESE PERSONS MORE EFFECTIVELY. THE PROBLEM OF THE SKID ROW DERELICT ARE REVIEWED, AND THE IMPACT OF ALCOHOLISM AND PROBLEM DRINKING ON POLICE ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES IS EXAMINED. THE PHYSIOLOGICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SOCIOLOGICAL FACTORS WHICH MAY INFLUENCE DRINKING BEHAVIOR AND CAUSE PROBLEM DRINKING ARE REVIEWED. THE LESSON STRESSES THAT ALCOHOLISM IS A DISEASE, AND OUTLINES THE PROGRESSIVE STATES OF ALCOHOLISM. NEW APPROACHES IN THE TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLICS AND THE HANDLING OF ALCOHOLICS BY POLICE ARE EXAMINED IN THE FINAL SECTION. IN ADDITION TO THE LESSON, THIS KEY INCLUDES QUESTIONS ON THE LESSON, SUGGESTIONS FOR RELATED READING, AND ANSWERS TO THE TRAINING KEY QUESTIONS.
