EVALUATION OF ONE OF THE CRIME PREVENTION PROJECTS OF THE EDEN PRAIRIE (MN) PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT WHICH INVOLVES A POLICE OFFICER'S INSPECTION OF A HOME OR BUSINESS TO IDENTIFY SECURITY DEFICIENCIES AND RECOMMEND CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
EDEN PRAIRIE'S PREMISE SURVEY PROGRAM IS DIFFERENT FROM MOST OTHERS IN THAT THE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE 'PRIORITIZED' OR LISTED IN ORDER OF THE BURGLAR'S MOST LIKELY POINT OF ENTRY INTO THAT PARTICULAR STRUCTURE. OCCUPANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO MAKE SECURITY CHANGES IN ORDER OF PRIORITY AT A RATE OF ONE PER MONTH. A FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONNAIRE WAS DEVELOPED AS A MEANS OF DETERMINING COMPLIANCE AND DISTRIBUTED COPIES AMONG 102 RECIPIENTS OF PRIORITIZED SURVEYS. THE QUESTIONNAIRE WAS DESIGNED TO GATHER INFORMATION ON RESPONDENTS' ACTUAL COMPLIANCE WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS AND OPINIONS ABOUT CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE SURVEY PROGRAM. FORTY-NINE PERCENT OF THE QUESTIONNAIRES WERE RETURNED. FINDINGS INDICATE THAT THERE WAS A HIGH DEGREE OF COMPLIANCE AMONG RESPONDENTS WHICH WAS NOT DEPENDENT UPON NUMBER OF CHANGES RECOMMENDED AND THAT ONLY SLIGHT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND AMONG COMPLIANCE LEVELS IN REGARD TO THEIR PREMISE SURVEY ATTITUDES WITH THE HIGH COMPLIANCE GROUP INDICATING STRONGER FEELINGS OF SECURITY AND EXPENSE. MORE RESEARCH INTO PREMISE SURVEY COMPLIANCE IN EDEN PRAIRIE AND ELSEWHERE IS RECOMMENDED.
