THE EMPHASIS OF THIS PROJECT WAS ON ISOLATING PROBLEMS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND RECOMMENDING VIABLE SOLUTIONS.
Abstract
DUE TO EXTREMELY LIMITED FUNDS AND MANPOWER, PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION EFFORTS WERE REDUCED TO ATTEMPTING TO CONVINCE THE EXISTING POWER STRUCTURES TO IMPLEMENT PROJECT RECOMMENDATIONS. THE MAJOR PROBLEMS APPROACHED BY THE PROJECT WERE THOSE RELATING TO PUBLIC INFORMATION, IMPROVED HANDLING OF CITIZENS, AN ANALYSIS OF THE ENTIRE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, DIVERSION FROM THE SYSTEM, WARRANTS, AND PRETRIAL RELEASE, AMONG OTHERS. SINCE THE PROJECT'S MAIN PRODUCTS WERE IDEAS, ITS EVALUATION ENTAILED CONSIDERATION OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS DEALTH WITH BY THE PROJECT AND A DISCUSSION OF THE EFFICACY OF THE RECOMMENDED SOLUTIONS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT, CONSIDERING THE PROGRAM BUDGET RESTRAINTS (SLIGHTLY OVER $133,000 FROM OCTOBER 1972 TO JUNE 1975), ITS ACCOMPLISHMENTS WERE QUITE NOTABLE. NO SUBSTANTIVE CHANGES FOR IMPROVEMENT WERE RECOMMENDED EXCEPT DEVELOPMENT OF A PLAN FOR ALTERNATIVE LEVELS AND MODES OF SUBSEQUENT OPERATION AND SOURCES OF FUNDING.
