IN DISCUSSING THE POTENTIAL OF SUPERVISION AND CARE ORDERS, THE OPPORTUNITIES AND SHORTCOMINGS OF RESIDENTIAL CARE, THE YOUTH SERVICES AND PROBATION, THE AUTHOR STRESSES THE RELATIVELY UNEXPLORED VALUE OF 'INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT', WHERE THE CHILD STAYS IN HIS OWN ENVIRONMENT BUT IS HELPED TO ATTAIN BETTER RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIS PEERS AND WIDER INTERESTS IN HIS OWN COMMUNITY.
