STIGMA AS APPLIED TO SOCIAL DEVIANCE AND CRIME USES THE SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONIST APPROACH TO EXPLAIN BOTH RECIDIVISM OR REPEATED DEVIANCE AND THE ACTUAL GENESIS OF CRIME.
Abstract
THE PAPER DELINEATES THE CHANGING LABELS OF DEVAINCE AS PART OF THE EXPLANATION OF STIGMA AND THE ROLE OF SOCIAL STIGMA IN GENERATING SOCIAL DEVIANCE AS COMPARED ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL AND THEN ON THE SOCIOLOGICAL LEVEL AS AN ACT OF POWER. MANY OTHER SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL AS WELL AS SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES OF CRIME AND DEVIANCE HAVE BEEN EXAMINED IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO STIGMA. THE MAKING OF JEAN GENET, THE THIEF PHILOSOPHER POET, HAS BEEN TAKEN AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE OPERATION OF STIGMA, AND THE SITUATIONAL ASPECTS OF VIOLENCE HAVE BEEN EXAMINED AS AN INSTANCE OF MUTUAL TAGGING AND LABELLING WITHIN THE SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONIST FRAME OF REFERENCE.
