RECENT ATTEMPTS AT FABRICATING FINGERPRINT EVIDENCE ARE DISCUSSED BY THE F.B.I. FINGERPRINT CHIEF IN LIGHT OF ADVERSE PUBLICITY (THE DE PALMA CASE).
Abstract
FBI LABORATORY TECHNICIANS TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO FABRICATE LATENT PRINTS. THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL AT FABRICATING FINGERPRINT EVIDENCE, HOWEVER. PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN BY FINGERPRINT TECHNICIANS TO MAINTAIN AN UNIMPEACHABLE CHAIN OF EVIDENCE AND, IF POSSIBLE, TO HAVE WITNESSES PRESENT AT THE LIFTING OF A PRINT. PHOTOGRAPHS ARE PROVIDED OF VARIOUS ATTEMPTS TO COPY FINGERPRINTS.
