THEFTS OF RARE MATERIALS FROM LIBRARIES, ARCHIVES, AND HISTORICAL SOCIETIES MAY BE THE FASTEST-GROWING AND LEAST-PUBLICIZED CRIME WAVE IN THE UNITED STATES.
Abstract
THE EXTENT OF LOSSES IS UNKNOWN BECAUSE MANY INSTITUTIONS DO NOT REPORT THEFT OUT OF FEAR OF PUBLICITY THAT COULD LEAD TO EMBARRASSMENT OR EVEN MORE LOSSES. THE SOCIETY OF AMERICAN ARCHIVISTS HAS OBTAINED A GRANT TO PUBLISH A CENTRAL LIST OF LOST AND STOLEN ARCHIVAL MATERIAL.
