INTENDED TO SERVE AS THE BASIS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM OR AS A REFERENCE ON SPECIFIC CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS, THIS MANUAL OFFERS GUIDELINES ON THE PLANNING, DEVELOPMENT, AND EVALUATION OF THESE PROGRAMS.
Abstract
A BASIC OVERVIEW OF CRIME PREVENTION IS FIRST PRESENTED TO ASSIST IN THE PLANNING AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM. THE MANUAL THEN OUTLINES THE CRITICAL STAGES INVOLVED IN PLANNING A CRIME PREVENTION UNIT AND PROVIDES GUIDELINES FOR EACH SPECIFIC PLANNING NEED. SUGGESTIONS ON ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES, BUILDING COMMUNITY SUPPORT, AND CONTINUING SUPPORT FOR THE CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM ARE PROVIDED. ALSO INCLUDED IS A SECTION ON LEGISLATIVE CONCERNS WHICH SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND CONTINUATION OF A CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM. SEVERAL SPECIFIC PROGRAMS WHICH HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE EFFECTIVE IN CRIME REDUCTION WHEN PROPERLY COORDINATED AS A CONCERTED POLICE/CITIZEN ACTIVITY. THE FINAL SECTION PROVIDES BASIC GUIDELINES ON EVALUATION OF CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS.
