REPORT ON A PROJECT TO DETERMINE CALIFORNIA'S NEEDS FOR A STATE JUDICIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (SJIS) WITH RESPECT TO EFFECTIVE COURT ADMINISTRATION AND EFFICIENT COMMUNICATION OF COURT DATA TO OTHER STATE AGENCIES.
Abstract
THE PROJECT TEAM ESTABLISHED EXPERIMENTAL SITES AT THE ALAMEDA SUPERIOR COURT AND THE OAKLAND-PIEDMONT MUNICIPAL COURT TO STUDY DATA PROCESSING AND RETRIEVAL ACTIVITIES. TEST RESULTS CONSISTING OF DEFINED DATA ELEMENTS AND PROVEN METHODS TO COLLECT, STORE, AND RETRIEVE COURT DATA WERE OBTAINED FOR A 450-CASE SAMPLE OF COMPLETED CASES. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE CRIMINAL HISTORY AND JUDICIAL STATISTICS NEEDS OF STATE GOVERNMENT COULD BE MET BY THE EVENT-BY-EVENT REPORTING OF INFORMATION ABSTRACTED FROM RECORDS CURRENTLY MAINTAINED IN THE CALIFORNIA TRIAL COURTS. IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT THE SJIS PROJECT NOT BE EXTENDED INTO ITS PLANNED SECOND PHASE.
