OVERVIEW OF THE SWEDISH CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM AND THE CONDITIONS LEADING UP TO ITS COMPLETE REFORM IN THE 1960'S AND 1970'S.
Abstract
DISCUSSIONS OF THE VARIOUS REFORM MEASURES AND THEIR GOALS INCLUDE CRITICISMS WHICH HAVE BEEN LEVELED AGAINST THEM AND STATISTICS ON THEIR IMPLEMENTATION. THE TOPICS CONSIDERED INCLUDE THE SWEDISH JUDICIAL PROCESS, SENTENCING, THE ADMINISTRATION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF SWEDISH PRISONS, AND INMATE GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES (BOTH WITHIN THE INSTITUTION AND IN THE COURTS). NOTABLE FEATURES OF THIS SYSTEM INCLUDE THE ABSENCE OF A SYSTEM OF BAIL, INMATE RETENTION OF RIGHTS (INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO VOTE AND THE OBLIGATION TO PAY TAXES), AND THE USE OF A NATIONAL OMBUDSMAN TO HANDLE INMATE COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE SYSTEM. --IN FRENCH...ELW
