REPORT OF AN INVESTIGATION OF ALLEGED POLICE COVERT ACTIVITIES BEHIND THE OPERATION OF A CALUMET CITY TAVERN IN THE SPRING OF 1975.
Abstract
THE ILLINOIS LEGISLATIVE INVESTIGATING COMMISSION UNDERTOOK THIS PROJECT IN RESPONSE TO ALLEGATIONS THAT THE ILLINOIS BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION WAS OPERATING A BUSINESS SUBSIDIZED BY THE STATE WITH THE PURPOSE OF EXPOSING POSSIBLE OFFICIAL CORRUPTION, PARTICULARLY CORUPTION OF THE MAYOR. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THOUGH THE ILLINOIS BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION (IBI) WAS NOT GUILTY OF ILLEGAL ACTS, ALMOST $56,000 IN FEDERAL FUNDS WERE WASTED ON THE IBI'S PROJECT, WHICH FAILED MAINLY BECAUSE OF ADMINISTRATIVE IMPRUDENCE.
