REPORT OF A PROJECT THAT OFFERED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO THE ALASKA COURT SYSTEM TO IMPROVE THE PRESENT SYSTEM OF PRETRIAL RELEASE AND TO AID IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF LEGISLATIVE AND COURT RULE CHANGES THAT OCCURRED IN 1974.
Abstract
SINCE ALASKA HAS ONE OF THE MOST MODERN BAIL STATUTES IN THE COUNTRY, THE CONSULTANT SUGGESTED THAT IMAGINATIVE USE OF THE STATUTE, ALONG WITH VIABLE SUPPORTIVE PROGRAMS, COULD EASILY ADD TO THE PRESENT SYSTEM'S EFFECTIVENESS. THE USE OF CITATION RELEASES IN MISDEMEANOR CASES, DIVERSION IN THE OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY, AND THE RIGHT TO SECURE RELEASE UPON POSTING 10 PERCENT OF THE AMOUNT OF BOND SET ARE SOME ILLUSTRATIONS OF CHANGES OFFERED THAT WOULD BE INEXPENSIVE. APPENDICES CONTAIN INFORMATION ON THE ALASKA BAIL STRUCTURE, THE BAIL AGENCY STATUTE, AND VARIOUS BAIL AGENCY FORMS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...KAP
