A MONOGRAPH DISCUSSING EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THE CONCLUSION THAT POLICE INTEGRITY IS AT LEAST PARTLY DETERMINED BY PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS THAT ARE PRESENT WHEN THE RECRUIT IS HIRED.
Abstract
DATA SUPPORTING THIS POSITION IS PRESENTED BOTH FROM THE PUBLISHED LITERATURE AND FROM THE AUTHOR'S OWN RESEARCH. THE AUTHOR'S SAMPLE CONSISTS OF A BROAD BATTERY OF PERSONALITY AND INTEREST TESTS ADMINISTERED TO MORE THAN 850 APPLICANTS TO 15 LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN THE SOUTHEAST AND FOLLOW-UP DATA ON APPROXIMATELY 350 OF THESE APPLICANTS WHO WERE HIRED. THE TEST BATTERY CONSISTS OF THE MINNESOTA MULTIPHOSIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY, THE MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR, THE STRONG VOCATIONAL INTEREST BLANK, AND A BIOGRAPHICAL INVENTORY. EVIDENCE ALSO INDICATED THAT THE PROBLEM OF POLICE INTEGRITY IS IN PART A FUNCTION OF THE PERSONALITY TYPE THAT IS ATTRACTED TO POLICE WORK....TWH
