FINAL REPORT ON A PROJECT TO STABILIZE OR REDUCE SUCH CRIMES AS AUTO THEFT, BURGLARY, AND ROBBERY IN THE THREE CITIES OF GRANDVILLE, KENTWOOD, AND WYOMING.
Abstract
THE PROJECT GOALS WERE TO IMPROVE COORDINATION OF POLICE CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES, TO PROVIDE CRIME PREVENTION EDUCATION TO THE PUBLIC, TO STIMULATE COMMUNITY TARGET HARDENING, AND TO IMPROVE POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS. SUCH SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES AS SECURITY INSPECTIONS OF BUILDINGS, WORKING WITH CITY OFFICIALS AND PLANNING COMMISSIONS TO PROMOTE ORDINANCES SUPPORTING CRIME PREVENTION, DISTRIBUTION OF INFORMATIONAL MATERIALS TO THE PUBLIC, AND PUBLICATION OF CRIME PREVENTION ARTICLES FOR THE LOCAL NEWS MEDIA. THE SPECIFIC GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE LISTED, AND THE ACTIONS TAKEN IN SUPPORT OF EACH GOAL ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS NOTED THAT THE PROGRAM HAS HAD A POSITIVE IMPACT, AS INDICATED BY SUCH VARIABLES AS COMMUNITY RESPONSES ON PROGRAM EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRES, SALES OF LOCK COMPANIES, USE OF PROGRAM PRESENTATIONS BY COMMUNITY SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, AND RESPONSES OF LOCAL BUSINESSES. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN THE PROGRAM WERE HOMEOWNER APATHY, AND NON-IMPLEMENTATION OF SECURITY RECOMMENDATIONS....DMC
