ARTICLE EXAMINES THE INCREASE IN THE COST OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN THE PAST DECADE.
Abstract
SINCE 1965 THE INCREASE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE EXPENDITURES HAS BEEN ONE OF THE LARGEST OF MAJOR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONS. ONLY THE PERCENT OF INCREASE IN PUBLIC WELFARE, AND HOUSING AND URBAN RENEWAL EXCEEDED IT. THE PERCENT OF INCREASE IN EDUCATION , AND HEALTH AND HOSPITALS FELL BELOW IT. THE OVERALL INCREASE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE WAS SOMEWHERE NEAR 80 PERCENT. THE SHARE OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE DOLLAR REMAINED ABOUT THE SAME AMONG POLICE, COURTS, AND CORRECTIONS. WHILE THE PERCENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SPENDING HAS SKYROCKETED FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, IT HAS REMAINED ABOUT THE SAME FOR LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS....BS
