Abstract
THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT A MAJOR FAILURE OF CRIMINOLOGY HAS BEEN ITS NEGLECT OF THE INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION OF BOTH CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AND SOCIAL CONTROL MECHANISMS. THE AMERICAN STATE'S COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP TO ORGANIZED CRIME IS EXAMINED WITH RESPECT TO CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (CIA), DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION (DEA), AND MILITARY COOPERATION WITH ORGANIZED CRIME IN FOREIGN POLICY AND ELSEWHERE. ORGANIZED CRIME IS SEEN AS A SERVANT OF THE ENTRENCHED CORPORATE AND POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT, AND THIS RELATIONSHIP IS TRACED THROUGH THE HISTORY OF ORGANIZED CRIME IN CHICAGO AND NEW YORK.
