THIS BOOK REPORTS ON RESEARCH ON THE EFFECT OF BUREAUCRACY ON PUBLIC POLICY BY FOCUSING ON A SINGLE POLICY INNOVATION: DEINSTITUTIONALIZATION IN JUVENILE CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
CHAPTERS 1 AND 2 DEAL WITH THE INTELLECTUAL ANTECEDENTS OF THE RESEARCH WHICH SEEKS TO DETAIL THE DETERMINANTS OF PUBLIC POLICY AND THE ADOPTION AND DIFFUSIONS OF POLICY INNOVATIONS. CHAPTER 3 DEALS WITH THE IMPACT OF THE GENERAL POLITICAL, SOCIAL, AND ECONOMIC ECOLOGY OF THE STATE. CHAPTER 4 DISCUSSES THE VARIATIONS IN THE TASK ENVIRONMENT OF A STATE THAT WILL BE EFFECTED BY INNOVATIVE POLICY CONCERNING THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUVENILE CORRECTIONS. CHAPTER 5 LOOKS AT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AGENCY AND ITS TOP ADMINISTRATOR AND HOW THEY AFFECT INNOVATIVENESS. THE FINAL CHAPTER CONTAINS THE SUBSTANTIVE, THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONCLUSIONS INCLUDING THAT THE STUDY OF A PARTICULAR BUREAUCRACY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT LEADS TO BETTER EXPLANATION OF THE VARIATION IN PUBLIC POLICY OUTPUT.
