THIS MONOGRAPH REVIEWS THE VARIOUS ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION IN TRAINING SCHOOLS WHICH HAVE BEEN USED IN VARIOUS JURISDICTIONS.
Abstract
THE VARYING CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING AND CLASSIFYING INDIVIDUAL DELINQUENTS FOR PARTICULAR PROGRAMS ARE DISCUSSED. THE TYPES OF ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS COVERED ARE INTERAGENCY COOPERATION SUCH AS CALIFORNIA'S YOUTH SERVICE BUREAUS AND PHILADELPHIA'S YOUTH RESOURCE CENTERS, DAY CARE ATTENDANCE CENTERS SUCH AS SAN MATEO'S AND GUIDED GROUP INTERACTION PROGRAMS. MODES OF EDUCATIONAL RESPONSE, INCLUDING THE PROVIDENCE EDUCATION CENTER, FAMILY COUNSELING, GROUP HOMES SUCH AS THE TORONTO AND CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY PROJECTS, AND DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAMS ARE ALSO REVIEWED. THE ANALYSIS OF EACH ALTERNATIVE CONSISTS OF A DESCRIPTION OF THE GOALS, ASSUMPTIONS, AND CRITERIA, A DISCUSSION OF THE TREATMENT PROGRAM, A SUMMARY, AND AN EVALUATION. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS PROVIDED FOR EACH CATEGORY OF TREATMENT.
