THE AUTHOR STRESSES THE VALUE OF HIGHER EDUCATION FOR POLICE, AND ARGUES THAT THE POLICE ADMINISTRATOR TODAY CANNOT EFFECTIVELY CARRY OUT HIS RESPONSIBILITIES WITHOUT A PROPER MIX OF PROFESSIONAL AND LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION.
Abstract
ONE WAY TO EFFECTIVELY MASTER THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGE FACED BY ALL POLICE ADMINISTRATORS IS THROUGH PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND TRAINING GAINED THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION. THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT HIGHER EDUCATION CAN ONLY MEET THE NEEDS OF THE POLICE PRACTITIONER THROUGH CAREFULLY DESIGNED COURSES OF EDUCATION WHICH CONTAIN LIBERAL ARTS AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS. SUCH AN APPROACH, THE AUTHOR STATES, WILL PRODUCE POLICE LEADERS CAPABLE OF BEING SENSITIVE TO THE PECULIAR NEEDS OF POLICING IN A FREE SOCIETY, ANALYZING AMBIGUOUS SITUATIONS, AND ACHIEVING ORDER WITHIN THE RESTRAINTS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS....DMC
