THIS BOOK IS A RECONSTRUCTION, FROM EXTENSIVE INTERVIEWS WITH THE 12 JURORS, OF THE ACTUAL EIGHT DAY DELIBERATIONS OF THE JURY WHICH CONVICTED JUAN CORONA OF 25 COUNTS OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN CALIFORNIA IN 1973.
Abstract
THE DIALOGUE AND ACTIONS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL JUROR ARE RECREATED IN THEIR STRUGGLE WITH THE TESTIMONY OF 117 WITNESSES, 980 EXHIBITS, AND OVER 9,000 PAGES OF TRANSCRIPT PRESENTED DURING THE FIVE MONTH TRIAL. THE INNER WORKINGS, SUBTLE DRAMA, AND PERSONALITY CONFLICTS OF THE JURY DELIBERATIONS ARE CONTRASTED WITH THE BAFFLING VOLUME OF EVIDENCE, THE AMBIGUITY OF THE CASE (THE DEFENDANT DID NOT TAKE THE STAND), AND THE ENORMITY OF THE CRIME (THE LARGEST MASS MURDER PROSECUTED IN THE U.S.). THE AUTHOR FOCUSES, IN THIS DAY-BY-DAY NONFICTION ACCOUNT, ON THE JURY AS THE FINAL, FALLIBLE LINK IN THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM....MSP
