Abstract
THE STUDY REPORTED IN THIS PAPER HAD TWO MAJOR OBJECTIVES. FIRST, THE AUTHORS SOUGHT TO REPLICATE OSCAR GRUSKY'S 1959 STUDY OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF TREATMENT GOALS FOR THE INFORMAL ORGANIZATION OF PRISON INMATES. SECOND, THE AUTHORS WERE CONCERNED WITH EXTENDING EXISTING FORMULATIONS ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE FORMAL AND INFORMAL STRUCTURE OF TOTAL INSTITUTIONS AND, IN PARTICULAR, THE CONDITIONS WHICH GENERATE INFORMAL ORGANIZATION THAT ARE FUNDAMENTALLY OPPOSED TO THE EXISTING ADMINISTRATION.
