SYNTHESIZING 23 ARTICLES, THE AUTHOR REVIEWS STUDIES ON THE GROUP TREATMENT OF JUVENILE AND ADULT OFFENDERS IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS WHICH PRESENT EVALUATIVE DATA ON GROUP COUNSELING OR PSYCHOTHERAPY PROGRAMS.
Abstract
SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ARE MADE, DRAWING ON CONTRIBUTIONS FROM NON-EVALUATIVE STUDIES IN THE FIELD WHEN EVALUATIVE STUDIES WERE MINIMAL. THE MAIN CONCLUSION DRAWN FROM THE REVIEW IS THAT, ALTHOUGH THE EVALUATIVE STUDIES REPORT A VARIETY OF POSITIVE RESULTS, STILL, AS A WHOLE THESE INVESTIGATIONS FALL SHORT OF THE CRITERIA OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, ESPECIALLY REGARDING REPLICATION. IT WAS NOTED THAT THE EVALUATIVE STUDIES WERE OFTEN LACKING IN CLEAR DESCRIPTIONS OF WHAT TAKES PLACE IN THE GROUP TREATMENT (WHAT ACCOUNTS FOR THE SUBSEQUENT CHANGES?).
