BASED ON A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND DATA FROM A 1974-1975 STUDY OF PROSTITUTES, THIS ARTICLE FINDS THAT PROSTITUTION IS AN OCCUPATIONAL CHOICE RESULTING FROM THE SAME MOTIVATIONS AS OTHER 'LEGITIMATE' CAREER CHOICES.
Abstract
THREE MAJOR CLASSES OF MOTIVATING FACTORS ARE EXAMINED IN THIS ARTICLE: CONSCIOUS FACTORS, SITUATIONAL FACTORS, AND PSYCHOANALYTICAL FACTORS. SPECIFICALLY, THE RESEARCH FOCUSED ON THE INFLUENCE OF SUCH VARIABLES AS ECONOMICS, THE PIMP, ADVENTURE AND WORKING CONDITIONS, PARENTAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT, EARLY LIFE EXPERIENCES, RETARDATION, LATENT HOMOSEXUALITY, AND OEDIPAL FIXATION. THE AUTHOR FINDS THAT PROSTITUTION IS PERCEIVED BY SOME WOMEN AS THEIR BEST OCCUPATIONAL ALTERNATIVE. THE DESIRE FOR A HIGHER INCOME AND AN INDEPENDENT, EXCITING LIFE-STYLE ARE THE MAJOR MOTIVATING FACTORS FOR MOST PROSTITUTES.
