THIS ARTICLE ON THE OPERATION AND EXPERIENCE OF FOUR OPEN PRISONS IN THE NETHERLANDS IS BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH BOTH STAFF AND INMATES.
Abstract
THIS TYPE OF FACILITY IS AVAILABLE TO SELECTED INMATES WHO HAVE SERVED AT LEAST ONE-HALF OF THEIR SENTENCE OR A MINIMUM OF EIGHT MONTHS IN A CLOSED FACILITY. DURING THE DAY, INMATES WORK IN LOCAL INDUSTRY OR AS CRAFTMEN; NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS ARE SPENT IN THE FACILITY, ALTHOUGH WEEKEND LEAVE IS GRANTED EVERY SIX WEEKS FOR FAMILY VISITS. THIS ARTICLE ALSO DEALS WITH PROBLEMS OF ADAPTATION FACED BY INMATES, DIFFICULTIES ARISING FROM ATTITUDES IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD, INMATE-STAFF RELATIONS, AND THE INTERNAL ORGANIZATION OF THE INSTITUTION. --IN DUTCH
