THIS DISSERTATION CONTAINS THE RESULTS OF A STUDY TESTING FAMILY INTERACTION AS A FACTOR IN CONTROLLING JUVENILE DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
THIS STUDY VIEWS A YOUTH AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF HIS FAMILY SYSTEM. EXAMINED IS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A COMMUNITY-BASED, FAMILY ORIENTATED JUVENILE DELINQUENCY INTERVENTION PROGRAM. TWO FAMILY ORIENTATED INTERVENTION APPROACHES WERE UTILIZED: FAMILY ORIENTATED PSYCHOTHERAPY AND A SET OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS CALLED PARENT EFFECTIVENESS TRAINING AND HUMAN EFFECTIVENESS TRAINING FOR YOUTH. IN THE FIRST APPROACH THE YOUTH WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THE INTERACT PROJECT WERE COMPARED WITH EACH OTHER ACCORDING TO THEIR LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT AND RECIDIVISM. IN THE SECOND APPROACH THE DELINQUENT YOUTH IN THE INTERACT PROGRAM WERE COMPARED WITH A COMPARISON GROUP FROM THE LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEM. THE FINDINGS OF THE RESEARCH PROCESS SUPPORTED THE HYPOTHESIS WHICH STATED: INTERVENTION IN THE FAMILY SYSTEM THROUGH FAMILY RELATED PSYCHOTHERAPY AND/OR THE EFFECTIVENESS TRAINING PROGRAMS WILL REDUCE THE DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR OF THOSE YOUTH IDENTIFIED AS HAVING ENGAGED IN DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR.
