THIS IS THE FINAL REPORT OF A THREE-YEAR EXPERIMENT THAT EMPHASIZED THE ADLERIAN APPROACH TO BEHAVIOR IMPROVEMENT AMONG JUVENILES, AND WAS DESIGNED TO ESTABLISH A CRIME-LESSENING 'THERAPEUTIC MILIEU' IN WOOD COUNTY.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM PROVIDED INTERRELATED COUNSELING SERVICES: THE SCHOOL-BASED COUNSELING PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED BY TWO COUNSELORS SERVING TWO SCHOOLS EACH AND A COMMUNITY-BASED COUNSELING COMPONENT IMPLEMENTED BY A COUNSELOR SERVING TWO HIGH SCHOOLS AND WORKING CLOSELY WITH APPOSITE AGENCIES. THE OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS WITHIN THE GENERAL GOAL OF RE-DIRECTING THEIR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR EMPHASIZED DECREASES IN REMOVAL FROM CLASS AND LOWER INCIDENTS OF TEACHER REFERRALS TO PRINCPALS. ANOTHER GOAL FOCUSED ON IMPROVING THE ABILITIES OF TEACHERS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS IN IDENTIFYING AND TREATING PROBLEMS OF DISRUPTIVE YOUTH. THE PARENTS OF PARTICIPATING STUDENTS WERE INVOLVED IN PARENT-STUDY GROUPS TO EFFECT POSITIVE CHANGES IN THEIR BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES TOWARD THEIR CHILDREN. MAJOR FINDINGS SUGGESTED THAT THE GUIDANCE PROJECT SUCCEEDED IN PRODUCING DECREASES IN STUDENT DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR. IN MORE MEASURABLE TERMS, THE PROJECT EFFECTED DEMONSTRABLE GAINS IN TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATOR UNDERSTANDING, ACCEPTANCE AND UTILIZATION OF THE PROJECT APPROACH AS REFLECTED IN THEIR REPORTS, QUESTIONNAIRES ADMINISTERED TO THEM, AND IN THEIR GENERAL PRACTICES. FURTHERMORE, OBJECTIVE DATA REGARDING PARENT INVOLVEMENT SUGGESTS THAT THIS GROUP BENEFITTED FROM THE PROGRAM BY THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN FORMAL ACTIVITIES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT )...KAP
