THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS AN OVERVIEW OF THE SWEDISH CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, WITH CONTRASTS TO THE AMERICAN SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE SWEDISH CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM IS ABOUT THE MOST LIBERAL IN THE WORLD, THE AUTHOR REPORTS. MANY OF THE PRISONS HAVE NO WALLS OR BARBED WIRE, AND PRISONERS CAN EVEN EARN FULL WAGES AT ONE OF THEM. CONJUGAL VISITS AND HOME FURLOUGHS ARE PERMITTED FOR ADULTS AND JUVENILES. THERE IS NO OVERCROWDING AND PAROLE CASELOAD SIZES RUN IN THE TWENTIES. IN SWEDEN, ONLY ONE IN SEVEN OFFENDERS GOES TO PRISON AT ALL, AND 90 PERCENT OF PRISONERS SERVE TERMS OF LESS THAN ONE YEAR. BUT THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE SWEDISH SYSTEM, THE ARTICLE EXPLAINS. MANY OF THE RIGHTS GUARANTEED TO SUSPECTED PERSONS IN THE STATES ARE NOT ENSURED IN SWEDEN....BDS
