Abstract
THE COURSE HAS SINCE EXPANDED TO A FULL YEAR COURSE TAUGHT IN ALL SIXTEEN CITY HIGH SCHOOLS AND SEVEN D.C. ADULT AND JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. STREET LAW'S CHIEF PURPOSE IS TO GIVE THOSE WHO STUDY IT SOME KNOWLEDGE OF LAW THAT CAN BE OF PRACTICAL USE TO THEM IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES (ON THE STREET). THIS IS A SUPPLEMENTAL EDITION TO 'STREET LAW: A COURSE IN PRACTICAL LAW,' NCJ-42156, A NATIONAL REVISED AND EXPANDED VERSION OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA CURRICULUM WHICH WAS FIRST PUBLISHED AS A SEPARATE TEXTBOOK IN 1974. IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN TO MEET A RECOGNIZED INTEREST AND DEMAND FOR EDUCATION OF LAY PERSONS IN THE LAW OF SENTENCING AND CORRECTIONS AND FOCUSES ON ISSUES OF IMMEDIATE CONCERN TO INMATES AND ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL. THE COURSE EMBODIES PRIMARILY A PROBLEM-INQUIRY APPROACH TO SENTENCING, APPEALS, PROBATION, HABEAS CORPUS, AND SUBSTANTIVE AND DUE PROCESS RIGHTS IN PRISON AND PAROLE. AN INTRODUCTORY SECTION ON LEGAL RESEARCH IS ALSO INCLUDED. APPENDED MATERIALS CONSIST OF STATUTES RELATED TO CORRECTIONS, A LIST OF PRISONER LEGAL ASSISTANCE GROUPS, AND SAMPLE COMPLAINTS AND WRITS OF HABEAS CORPUS. AN ACCOMPANYING TEACHERS' MANUAL, NCJ-42154, DISCUSSES PROBLEMS POSED IN THE STUDENT TEXT AND ALSO CONTAINS A BIBLIOGRAPHY, A LIST OF AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS, AND A MOCK TRIAL ON PRISONERS' MAIL RIGHTS.
