EXCERPT FROM A PAPER ON THE SWEDISH SKANNINGE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION, SUMMARIZING THE RESULTS OF AN OPINION SURVEY AMONG INSTITUTIONAL PERSONNEL AND INMATES AND DISCUSSING THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY.
Abstract
ABOUT 34 PERCENT OF THE INMATES HAD BEEN SENTENCED FOR DRUNKEN DRIVING AND ABOUT 60 PERCENT HAD FIVE MONTHS OR LESS TO SERVE. THE DRUNKEN DRIVING INMATES CONSTITUTED A CLASS APART FROM THE LONGER-TERM INMATES BECAUSE OF THEIR HIGHER SOCIAL STANDING AND THE TWO CLASSES TENDED TO KEEP TO THEMSELVES. A MAJORITY OF THE INMATES HAD APPLIED FOR ADMISSION TO THE QUESTIONS ASKED IN THE SURVEY COVERED MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF PRISON LIFE.
