THE TEXT FIRST EXAMINES THE HANDGUN AND HANDGUN TRAINING IN AMERICAN POLICE HISTORY. SUBSEQUENT CHAPTERS DISCUSS MENTAL CONDITIONING FOR COMBAT SHOOTING; THE TRAINING OF OFFICERS TO MAKE LETHAL DECISIONS INSTANTLY, E.G., KNOWING WHEN TO SHOOT TO KILL; AND THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE AND COMPLICATIONS AFTER ITS USE. THE TEXT FOCUSES ON PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF HANDGUN TRAINING AND POLICE COMBAT MATCHES; SPECIFIC WEAPONS AND THEIR USE IN TRAINING AND ON THE JOB ARE ALSO ANALYZED. OTHER CHAPTERS DISCUSS PRIVATE COMBAT TRAINING SCHOOLS, A CROSS SECTION OF AMERICAN POLICE HANDGUN PROGRAMS, THE POLICE OFFICER IN SOCIETY, A NEW APPROACH TO HANDGUN CONTROLS AND THE ROLE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT MAY PLAY IN THE FUTURE IN CONTROLLING ILLEGAL HANDGUNS, PUBLIC RELATIONS, NIGHT FIRING, BODY ARMOR, AND THE RURAL POLICE OFFICER.
