INFORMATION ON CANADA'S JUVENILE DELINQUENTS IS BASED ON STATISTICS REPORTED BY JUVENILE COURTS AND BY MAGISTRATES AND JUSTICES OF THE PEACE WHO HEAR ESTABLISHED.
Abstract
THE UPPER AGE LIMIT FOR CLASSIFICATION OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS IN CANADA VARIES FROM 16 TO 18 YEARS OF AGE DEPENDING ON THE PROVINCE. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MANITOBA, ONLY THOSE CASES HEARD FORMALLY WERE REPORTED. THE STATISTICS ARE DIVIDED INTO FOUR PARTS, BASED ON VARIATIONS IN THE PROVINCIAL METHODS OF REPORTING DATA: (1) CANADA DATA, EXCLUDING MANITOBA, ALBERTA, AND ONTARIO; (2) MANITOBA JUVENILES REPORTING PROGRAM; (3) ALBERTA JUVENILES REPORTING PROGRAM; AND (4) ONTARIO JUVENILES REPORTING PROGRAM. THE STATISTICS REFLECT TWO COUNTS: ONE IN WHICH EACH JUVENILE INVOLVED IN DELINQUENCY IS COUNTED ONLY ONCE FOR THE YEAR, AND ANOTHER IN WHICH EACH ACT OF DELINQUENCY IS COUNTED. THE TABLES COVER SUCH INFORMATION AS SOURCE OF COMPLAINT, NATURE OF DELINQUENCY, AGE AND SEX OF DELINQUENTS, ADJUDICATION AND DISPOSITION, LIVING CONDITIONS AND EMPLOYMENT STATUS OF DELINQUENTS, AND TYPE OF COURT. (IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH).
