THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION AS WELL AS TEST AND EVALUATION OF A BOMB DISPOSAL UNIT ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
A DESCRIPTION OF THE DESIGN OF THE CONTAINMENT VESSEL, MATERIAL SELECTION, FABRICATION, AND TRAILER IS PRESENTED. TWO SERIES OF TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON THE BOMB DISPOSAL UNIT (CONTAINER AND TRAILER) USING 60 PERCENT DYNAMITE AS AN EXPLOSIVE, INCLUDING THE DETONATION OF TWO PIPE BOMBS (2 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND 10 INCHES TOTAL LENGTH) CONTAINING 60 PERCENT DYNAMITE. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE CONTAINER SAFE LIMIT IS AT LEAST 50 POUNDS OF 60 PERCENT DYNAMITE. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE LIMIT OF THE CONTAINER, BEFORE FRACTURE WOULD OCCUR, WOULD BE IN THE RANGE OF 75 TO 100 POUNDS OF 60 PERCENT DYNAMITE. THE TRAILER USED IN THIS BOMB CONTAINMENT UNIT WAS FOUND TO BE INADEQUATE. APPENDIXES PRESENT CERTIFICATION OF MATERIAL AND WELDING PROCEDURES.
