THIS AUDIOVISUAL PRESENTATION PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF HOSTAGE SITUATIONS. THREE EXAMPLES OF POSSIBLE HOSTAGE SITUATIONS ARE PRESENTED, ALONG WITH DETAILS ON POLICE AND BANK PERSONNEL TRAINING AND EXECUTIVE SECURITY.
Abstract
THE FIRST FICTIONAL SITUATION EXAMINED CONCERNS THE KIDNAPPING OF A CORPORATE EXECUTIVE BY A GROUP OF POLITICAL FANATICS CALLING THEMSELVES THE 'RED DAWN COMMANDOS.' SUGGESTIONS ARE OFFERED FOR HOME AND FAMILY SECURITY, AND A DISCUSSION OF WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO ACT IN HOSTAGE SITUATIONS IS INCLUDED. THE SECOND EPISODE DEALS WITH A MENTALLY ILL AIRCRAFT HIJACKER WHO THREATENS TO BLOW UP A PLANE IF HIS FRIENDS ARE NOT RELEASED FROM CUSTODY. METHODS OF UNDERSTANDING THE HIJACKER'S PERSONALITY AND DEALING WITH HIS DEMANDS ARE DISCUSSED. THE FINAL, AND LONGEST, EPISODE DEALS WITH A PROFESSIONAL CRIMINAL WHO SEIZES A HOSTAGE DURING A BANK HOLDUP. THIS EPISODE CONSIDERS LAW ENFORCEMENT AIMS AND PRIORITIES, SUCH AS SETTING UP A COMMAND POST AND TECHNIQUES OF NEGOTIATION. THE 'STOCKHOLM SYNDROME,' IN WHICH HOSTAGES DEVELOP AN AFFINITY FOR THEIR CAPTORS, IS ALSO EXAMINED.
