Abstract
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION TECHNIQUES ARE TREATED BOTH IN GENERAL TERMS AND IN TERMS OF SPECIFIC CRIMES. GENERAL PRINCIPLES FOR ALL INVESTIGATIONS ARE OUTLINED, WITH EMPHASIS ON METHODICAL BUT QUICK WORK. THE TYPE OF CRIME -- AGGRESSIVE, IMPULSIVE, FOR PROFIT -- IS SHOWN TO BE AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE MEASURES TO BE USED IN THE INVESTIGATION. THE PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION AND THE DETERMINATION OF THE DETAILS OF THE CRIME (WITNESSES, CLUES AT OR NEAR THE CRIME SCENE, CONFIRMATION OF ALIBIS) ARE DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS CONSIDERATIONS OF THE MOTIVE FOR A CRIME, FLIGHT OF THE CRIMINAL, AND CONFESSIONS. SPECIFIC CRIMES ARE THEN EXAMINED, WITH THE PECULIAR CONSIDERATIONS INVOLVED IN INVESTIGATING EACH. MURDER (DURING A ROBBERY, IN A FIGHT, SELF-DEFENSE, SEXUAL KILLINGS), ARMED ROBBERY, BURGLARY, AUTO THEFT, PURSE-SNATCHING, SHOPLIFTING, DRUG-RELATED CRIMES, EXHIBITIONISM, PROSTITUTION, AND ARSON ARE AMONG THE SPECIFIC TYPES OF CRIMES CONSIDERED. A DISCUSSION OF STATEMENTS CENTERS UPON THE VARIOUS TYPES OF WITNESSES WHO MAY BE CALLED UPON TO MAKE STATEMENTS, WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED OF THEM, AND THE DIFFERING TECHNIQUES WHICH SHOULD BE EMPLOYED IN DEALING WITH THEM. SUCH TYPES AS GOSSIPY, TACITURN, FANATIC, FRIGHTENED, AND INTELLIGENT WITNESSES ARE DESCRIBED INDIVIDUALLY. QUESTIONING TECHNIQUES, AGAIN GEARED TO THE SPECIFIC PERSONALITY, AGE, OR OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUSPECT, ARE EXPLAINED. IN THE FINAL SECTION, CONCERNED WITH CRIME REPORTING, INVESTIGATORS LEARN TO COMPLETE THE REQUIRED REPORTS ON VARIOUS TUPES OF CRIMES. SAMPLE FORMS ARE PROVIDED FOR EACH CLASS OF CRIME, ALONG WITH GUIDELINES TO HELP IN GIVING EACH PIECE OF INFORMATION REQUESTED ACCURATELY AND COMPLETELY. OTHER REPORTS WHICH INSPECTORS MUST OFTEN COMPLETE INCLUDE THOSE CONCERNING MISSING PERSONS, UNIDENTIFIED BODIES, AND COUNTERFEIT MONEY; EACH OF THESE IS EXPLAINED. REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED AT THE END OF EACH SECTION. FOR VOLUME 2, SEE NCJ-44131. --IN GERMAN. (VDA)
