WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF INTEREST GROUP CONFLICT, THIS TEXT PROVIDES A BASIC DISCUSSION OF THE PRINCIPAL ISSUES AND RESEARCH FINDINGS IN THE FIELD OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
CHAPTERS EXPLORING PERSPECTIVES ON DEVIANTS AND DEVIANCE DISCUSS THE CLASSICAL AND POSITIVE SCHOOLS OF CRIMINOLOGY, PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DEVIANTS, HEREDITY AND MENTAL DEFICIENCIES, PERSONALITY DEFECTS AND ATTRIBUTES, ECONOMIC INFLUENCES, ANOMIE, SUBCULTURES OF DEVIANCE, VERBALIZED MOTIVES, AND THE SITUATIONAL ELEMENT. IN PROBING THE REASONS FOR DEVIANT BEHAVIOR, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE LABELING PERSPECTIVE, CONFLICT PERSPECTIVES, AND INTEREST GROUP CONFLICT AND DEVIANCE. CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS AND PROPERTY ARE ANALYZED ALONG WITH DEVIANCE WITHIN AND BY ORGANIZATIONS (E.G., WHITE-COLLAR AND OCCUPATIONAL CRIME, EMPLOYEE THEFT, POLICE CORRUPTION, POLITICAL CORRUPTION, DEVIANCE BY INDUSTRY, BUSINESS FRAUDS, AND ORGANIZED CRIME). A SEPARATE CHAPTER FOCUSES ON DEVIANT DRUG USE, COVERING THE USE OF ALCOHOL, HEROIN, MARIHUANA, AND DRUG CONTROL. A DISCUSSION OF MENTAL DISORDERS INCLUDES CORRELATES OF MENTAL DISORDER, THE LABELING MODEL, AND THE THERAPEUTIC STATE. SEXUAL DEVIANCE IS EXAMINED IN THE CONTEXT OF PROSTITUTION AND HOMOSEXUALITY. NAME AND SUBJECT INDEXES ARE INCLUDED.
