THE BACKGROUND OF NEW MEXICO'S UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM IS REVIEWED, AND STATISTICS ON INDEX CRIMES IN NEW MEXICO FOR 1976 ARE PRESENTED AND ANALYZED.
Abstract
THE INTENT OF THE NEW MEXICO PROGRAM IS TO SUPPLY LOCAL COMMUNITY AGENCIES, INSTITUTIONS, AND ORGANIZATIONS WITH STATISTICS USEFUL IN DETERRING, REDUCING, AND PREVENTING CRIME. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON VIOLENT INDEX OFFENSES (MURDER AND NON-NEGLIGENT MANSLAUGHTER, FORCIBLE RAPE, ROBBERY, AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT) AND FOR NONVIOLENT INDEX OFFENSES (BURGLARY, LARCENY, MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT). STATISTICS ARE BROKEN DOWN BY MONTH, BY SUBCLASSIFICATION OF OFFENSE, AND, IN SOME INSTANCES, BY VICTIM CHARACTERISTICS AND TYPE OF WEAPON INVOLVED. FOR EACH INDEX CRIME, TABULAR DATA ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A BRIEF ANALYSIS AND BY A DEFINITION OF THE CRIME. ALSO INCLUDED ARE STATE TOTALS FOR INDEX CRIMES AND DATA ON THE TYPE AND VALUE OF PROPERTY STOLEN AND RECOVERED FOR INDEX OFFENSES. DATA ARE ALSO PRESENTED ON ALL ADULT AND JUVENILE ARRESTS FOR INDEX AND NONINDEX OFFENSES DURING THE YEAR, ON INCIDENCES OF POLICE ASSAULT, AND ON THE DISPOSITION OF JUVENILE CASES. CRIME INDEX TRENDS FROM 1975 TO 1976 REVEAL A STATEWIDE INCREASE OF 8.4 PERCENT FOR ALL INDEX CRIMES, A 6.7 PERCENT INCREASE FOR VIOLENT INDEX CRIMES, AND AN 8.6 PERCENT INCREASE FOR NONVIOLENT INDEX CRIMES. THE REPORT CLOSES WITH A COUNTY-BY-COUNTY BREAKDOWN OF INDEX CRIME STATISTICS FOR 1975 AND 1976.
