THE STATUS OF WOMEN IN POLICE FORCES, PROBLEMS FACING WOMEN WHO DO ENTER THE PROFESSION, AND WAYS IN WHICH THE PRESENCE OF WOMEN WILL CHANGE TRADITIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE EXAMINED ON A WORLDWIDE BASIS.
Abstract
AN OVERVIEW OF THE ENTRANCE OF WOMEN INTO THIS MALE-ORIENTED FIELD TRACES THE EVOLUTION OF FEMALE DIVISION WITHIN REGULAR POLICE FORCES (E.G., NEW YORK CITY'S SEX CRIMES ANALYSIS UNIT) INTO THE INTEGRATION OF WOMEN AT ALL LEVELS OF POLICE WORK, INCLUDING PATROL. THE TRADITIONAL IMAGE OF THE FORCEFUL, AUTHORITATIVE POLICE OFFICER IS SEEN GIVING WAY TO A NEW, MORE SOCIALLY-ORIENTED IDEOLOGY FOR THE POLICE FORCE IN GENERAL. THE ACCEPTANCE OF FEMALE OFFICERS BY THE PUBLIC AND POLICE FORCES ALIKE WILL RESULT IN A MORE HUMANE, AND HUMAN, SYSTEM OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. --IN FRENCH.
